Ebook About
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERThe essential, sweeping story of Juneteenth’s integral importance to American history, as told by a Pulitzer Prize–winning historian and Texas native.Weaving together American history, dramatic family chronicle, and searing episodes of memoir, Annette Gordon-Reed’s On Juneteenth provides a historian’s view of the country’s long road to Juneteenth, recounting both its origins in Texas and the enormous hardships that African-Americans have endured in the century since, from Reconstruction through Jim Crow and beyond. All too aware of the stories of cowboys, ranchers, and oilmen that have long dominated the lore of the Lone Star State, Gordon-Reed—herself a Texas native and the descendant of enslaved people brought to Texas as early as the 1820s—forges a new and profoundly truthful narrative of her home state, with implications for us all.Combining personal anecdotes with poignant facts gleaned from the annals of American history, Gordon-Reed shows how, from the earliest presence of Black people in Texas to the day in Galveston on June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger announced the end of legalized slavery in the state, African-Americans played an integral role in the Texas story.Reworking the traditional “Alamo” framework, she powerfully demonstrates, among other things, that the slave- and race-based economy not only defined the fractious era of Texas independence but precipitated the Mexican-American War and, indeed, the Civil War itself. In its concision, eloquence, and clear presentation of history, On Juneteenth vitally revises conventional renderings of Texas and national history. As our nation verges on recognizing June 19 as a national holiday, On Juneteenth is both an essential account and a stark reminder that the fight for equality is exigent and ongoing.

Book On Juneteenth Review :

Juneteenth has been celebrated recently throughout the United States, but originally the date was significant only to Texans, as it marked the day that African Americans in Texas were told that slavery was over by Major General Granger. This book is a collection of essays written by Annette Gordon-Reed; a woman with a unique history, and with deep family roots in Texas. Gordon-Reed explains both the history of the state and her own personal experiences being a black girl growing up in the 1960s integration era.I actually learned quite a bit by reading this book, as there was much about the history of Texas that I wasn't familiar with; especially as it pertained to Mexico's conflict with early Anglo settlers over the institution of slavery. Texas actually has a pretty complicated history, and as Gordon-Reed points out, the huge influence of slavery is often glossed over in the story of the fight for independence in Texas. I feel like this information is still not really adequately explained in many schools, partly because the horrors of slavery are too uncomfortable to discuss. This was easy to read, and fairly short, at only 150 pages in six chapters. It inspired me to do more research on my own, as I was surprised at how much information was new to me. I appreciate the author for sharing a part of their life, and even more importantly, for shining a light on these events in history that many people might not be aware of.
Annette Gordon-Reed's insightful collection of six essays about Texas' complex history of African Americans spanning from the 1500s to the lifetime of the author provides critical contexts to the problems imposed by slavery and its lasting repercussions both upon Texas and the United States. Well documented and written in an engaging style, this work encapsulates essential viewpoints needed in our national retrospective of American life, culture, history, and combined soul. Each essay has a different tone and subject emphasis. Although each standalone chapter is independently worthwhile, their combined message teach us strong lessons of why the mistakes of the past must never be glossed over or justified.Strikingly clear are focused arguments on Texas' original constitution that enshrined slavery and forbid free-blacks from residing in the country then state. When emancipation came on June 19, 1865 ("Juneteenth"), the promises made were thwarted at every step, implemented in stages over a century, and still lagging behind other states in cultural acceptance. The essays tell how Texas history includes a troubled assimilation of Native American, Hispanic, European, and African American peoples and cultures, each facing different challenges and using different approaches. The author's strong personal and family lived experiences shared add depth and individual humanity to the tragic effects of misguided social inertia that has persisted far too long. However, another story emerges too of the search for truth, the whole story, and a more complete understanding and the basis for creating lasting, more meaningful, and unifying changes in our shared future. We've learned much, but we still need to learn more.A most thought-provoking and eye-opening read. Audible's narration companion option worked well for my initial read. This work serves well as a focus for history or sociology courses, and book clubs.
